“Ladies and gentlemen. I have understood in this case that the scales of justice cannot always be evenly weighed and I must learn for once to live with the imbalance.” — Hercule Poirot

Murder on the Orient Express (2017)

Generally, I love watching movies in variety genre, especially detective movies. Of course, the main duty of the detective is to investigate the situation and solve the crime. When detectives try to investigate, I will be so excited because I love to think along with them; sometimes, I feel like I am that detective myself. Nonetheless, in each detective movie, there will be one crime at least. Some has just one, but some has two or three cases. Those crime sometimes make me depress, yet I still love watching them.

Murder on the Orient Express(1934) by Agatha Christie

Murder on the Orient Express(2017) is a movie directed by Kenneth Branagh, based on the 1934 novel by Agatha Christie. The movie stars by Kenneth Branagh (the director) as Hercule Poirot, with Michelle Preiffer, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., Daisy Ridley, and Johnny Depp in supporting roles.

Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot

The movie starts with a Belgium perfectionistic detective Hercule Poirot solving a crime at Jerusalem. He is tried and wants to rest, but he has to go to London for another case. On the train, there is a mysterious murder of a man called Edward Ratchett. He is stabbed disorderly a dozen times. Poirot is begged by his friend, Mr. Bouc, to solve this crime. He investigates, and the clues slowly emerge throughout his investigation. Then, he know the truth that this crime is the result of the kidnapping and murder of a cute baby girl Daisy Armstrong by a ruthless man John Cassetti, whom we know as Ratchett the death man. In the end, certainly, he knows Cassetti was killed by whom.

This movie run quite simply but meticulously. The murder and investigation parts turned out so exciting. However, unfortunately, the movie is rather emphasize the intelligence of Hercule Poirot, so there are not many murderers’ background enough. Therefore, it came out quite unclear in some part. Moreover, there are many well-known star in the movie, but the distinction seems to lie on Branagh quite much; some stars have a role less than it should be. It is unfortunate but understandable because the plot in the novel lays in that way.

Nevertheless, we must admit that Murder on the Orient Express(2017) demonstrated the trick unexpectedly in the end. Also, there is a point on the scale of justice. In fact, that scale doesn’t always work precisely. Figuratively like human beings, even the so-called cause and effect are created to understand the things that are happened, people eventually make their own decisions and choose to follow their own intuition and heart.
